THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND CORTES DE LA FRONTERA

HIKING

Situated on the edge of both the Los Alcornocales and the Sierra de Grazalema National Parks, La Torre de Piedra is the perfect location for walking and hiking.  The most popular times are the spring and autumn when the climate is perfect and there are wild flowers in profusion!
It really is a truly magical area and there are guide books and local maps in the house to help you explore it.

The breathtaking Canyon de las Buitreras is a marvellous hike with frequent sightings of the Griffon Vultures who nest there.  You can also sign up for a canyoning trip in the gorge itself which is a truly unforgettable way to spend a day!

With the rich abundance of flora and fauna in the area, there will always be something wonderful to spot on your hike.

CYCLING

This area is fantastic for mountain-biking with over 300kms of off-road tracks that wind through the stunning cork oak forests of the Los Alcornocales Natural Park. You can also explore the towns and villages in the area by bicycle with plenty of roadside Ventas along the way where you can stop for a cool drink.

SIGHTSEEING

If you fancy doing some sightseeing, just a short drive or train ride away is the historic hilltop town of Ronda perched over the spectacular El Tajo gorge.  Enjoy a lovely day out wandering through the shaded streets and exploring the many tapas bars and shops.

Why not also take a drive to see some of the “pueblos blancos” or white villages synonymous with the area? There are some great circular routes and it is such a pleasure to stop along the way and take in the views or find a little restaurant for a great lunch or just a tapa in one of the local bars.  Why not try some of the local produce like jamón Ibérico, Serrano ham on the bone from the local acorn-fed black pigs or some venison or delicious artisan cheeses.

If you want to venture a bit further afield, you can visit Granada, home of the magnificent Alhambra or Seville with its Alcázar or Cordoba on the banks of the Guadalquivir.  There is also the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz to visit for a great day at the beach.
